Korean War Memorial

Words from the Artist

Over the course of three summers, I completed four murals documenting the Korean War, executing a vision and design provided by the foundation and bringing it to life on a large scale

What began as a technical role quickly became something more immersive. As I painted, I found myself learning the history in real time, gaining a deeper understanding of the stories behind each piece. The process opened the door to meaningful conversations with residents who stopped by … some curious, some reflective, many personally connected to the history being depicted.

I worked through heat and rain, earning every inch of each wall. One of the most meaningful parts of the experience was inviting children to participate, offering the chance to leave a brushstroke behind, small but lasting contributions that grounded the work in the present while honoring the past.

This project became more than execution, it became a shared experience between history, community, and the act of creating.

About the Artist

Amber Staedtler

I consider myself an abstract, intuitive expressionist artist, deeply inspired by the complexities and contradictions of the female experience. My work is a dialogue between the conscious and subconscious, where form, color, and movement become a language for emotions that are often difficult to articulate. Through this perspective, I explore themes of love, loss, resilience, intimacy, and transformation, drawing from my lived experiences as a woman, mother, friend, and lover. Each painting becomes a snapshot of my inner world, a visual poem that captures a fleeting moment in time, one that is often layered with memory, longing, and reflection, and yet, once created, will never return in quite the same way. Beyond creating for myself, I feel called to share my vulnerability as a way of giving back, inviting others to find connection, healing, and recognition within the language of color and form. Outside of the studio, I am an educator and creative professional with more than 20 years of experience in design, fashion, marketing, and book publishing. These worlds have shaped my sensibilities, giving me an eye for narrative, composition, and the interplay between image and story. When all that quiets down, I turn to the most meaningful and unpredictable role of all, being a mother to twins, an experience that continues to reshape how I see, create, and move through the world.
